I’m pleased with what I read this year. I’m 200 pages from the end of what would have been book 43 but I ran out of time. It’ll be a rollover.

I’ve covered a lot of Infinite Jest this month, though I’m still not sure whether I’ll finish it in October, and I’m within a hundred pages of finishing another novel. However, I’ve only finished two books this month:

The death of David Foster Wallace, who killed himself on Friday, is terribly sad news. Sad, of course, for his wife, his family and his friends. Sad too, for us, that he will never write any more of his breathtaking prose. He was 46 years old.

July’s books have taken me past 26 for the year so far. Last year I didn’t reach 26 until September and in 2006 it took until December to reach that point so I’m making progress.
Book 26: Created in Darkness by Troubled Americans edited by Dave Eggers
Book 27: Man in the Dark by Paul Auster

Just two this month but that’s largely thanks to the two monsters I mentioned last month. I’m still working through those. Together they clock in at well over 1,000,000 words. Anyway, here’s what I read while I was taking breaks from those:
Book 24: The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway
Book 25: The Laughing Policeman by Maj [...]

Five more books in May brings me to 23 for the year so far. I didn’t reach that mark until the end of July last year so I’m two months ahead of the 2007 total. However, I’m now juggling two thousand-page-plus monsters so I’ll be lucky if I finish even one book in June. We’ll [...]
