This novel suffers from Smiley's presence, Westerby's own shortcomings become glaring, painful and labored. Instead of appearing chivalrous or even "honourable", like Alec Lemas, Westerby comes off stupid, controlled only by his desires and impulses. Perhaps this is as it should be, I mean how many George Smileys' really exist among us? But for a read it comes off quite weak and out of place compared to the brilliance of the other two novels.
